Public support for EU enlargement in the context of Russia’s war on Ukraine
Dr. Dmytro Panchuk, Ghent University
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 marked one of the most severe security crises in Europe since World War II. In response, the EU granted candidate status to Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia, and renewed momentum for the Western Balkans. These steps reflected geopolitical solidarity and coincided with a notable shift in public opinion in favour of enlargement. This talk explores how support for enlargement – especially Ukraine’s candidacy – is linked to the perception of Russia as a security threat. It also examines differences across member states and discusses how public backing can be maintained or even strengthened in the coming years.
