Tasks and Goals

The Southeast Europe Association e.V. (SOG) as an intermediary organization supports the political, scientific and socio-cultural exchange with as well as the analysis of Southeast Europe. Institutionally supported by the German Federal Foreign Office, we have been one of the most important supporters of German foreign cultural policy since our foundation in 1952. We see it as the SOG’s task to build bridges through our activities.

Key Tasks of the SOG

The Association is dedicated to the promotion of academic, political, economic and cultural relations with the countries of Southeast Europe and seeks to offer in-depth knowledge on historical and contemporary developments in this region.

The SOG is Independent and Non-partisan

According to our statutes, the SOG is a private and non-profit association of experts from academia, politics, business, culture and the media. The head office of the Association is located in Munich. The SOG is also represented by regional branches at the most important German universities as well as in Graz, Klagenfurt and Vienna (Austria).

Through our events, publications and the expert knowledge of our members, we offer a forum for independent and non-partisan dialogue between the Federal Republic of Germany and the countries of Southeast Europe, as well as for policy consulting and for policy debates.

Information, Knowledge Transfer and Networking

We see it as one of our central tasks to build partnerships with individuals, organizations and institutions in Southeast Europe,  the German-speaking and the international professional community with regional expertise. Our network connects researchers and practitioners from Germany and the region to work on issues of importance to the region and Europe as a whole.

Successful research and the development of solutions to problems require a future-oriented dialogue across borders, between states and interest groups. Our Association therefore conducts its interdisciplinary dialogue at the national, international and transnational level.
