Topic
What are the different meanings and interpretations of change, transformation, and transition in contemporary Southeast Europe? How can we attend to dynamics of change, and what kind of embeddedness can we afford? With a focus on the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st century, 24 authors from a wide range of interdisciplinary fields—including political, social, and economic sciences, geography, history, anthropology, communication, media and sound studies, as well as internationally renowned artists—engage with these questions in a newly launched multimedia website based on the International Academic Week 2023.
The platform seeks to move beyond authoritative academic voices, shifting away from propositional and prescriptive monologues towards open-ended, collective conversations. Curated by Prof. Daniel Göler and Prof. Eckehard Pistrick, in collaboration with web designer Timo Meisel and graphic designer Bijan Dawallu, the website explores the topic through a variety of multimedia content, innovative audio formats, and virtual exhibitions. It invites users to engage with the material through cross-referenced themes along three intersecting dimensions: time, space, and culture.
In exploring new approaches to the communication of academic knowledge, the platform also asks: What do innovative formats of science communication look like? The website of the International Academic Week offers an experimental space where scholarly reflection and artistic intervention interact in multiple ways. This live online presentation will introduce the site and its guiding ideas, and will include a discussion with the two curators and the web designer, addressing the possibilities and limitations of online exhibition formats. Topics will include design, ethics, aesthetics, and accessibility, with the wider online audience invited to join the conversation.
