Beyond the Exchange: Remembering the 1923 Turkish-Greek Population Exchange
Speaker: Şahin Yaldiz, Giessen
Şahin Yaldız will present his doctoral dissertation, which examines the long-term ramifications of the 1923 Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey. His research, grounded in extensive ethnographic fieldwork with second- and third-generation descendants of Turkish exchangees, offers a detailes analysis of the enduring social and cultural consequences of this catasthropic historical event. The presentation will foreground the salience of stigma and linguistic assimilation challenges encountered by the exchangees. Furthermore, it will explore the relationship between the nation-building project of the early Turkish Republic (1923-1950) and the lived experiences of this displaced population. Ultimately, Yaldız's work elucidates the genesis of the 'exchangee' cultural identity, meticulously dissecting the key social and political determinants that have shaped its formation and evolution over time.
